So there is no shortage of travel tips online. How to pack light; how to fold clothes like a butler: how to choose the perfect walking sandals, etc, etc. But while these are all either useful or interesting, my number 1 travel tip is much simpler.
First to put things in context. I’m Scottish which means two things – firstly the sun is not kind to us. Ten minutes in full sunlight and I do a great impression of a vampire – just falling short of bursting into flame!
Secondly, and most importantly, either here or abroad, I get eaten alive. Midges, mosquitoes, wasps, you name it. If it stings, burns or bites, it makes a (pardon the pun!) beeline for me.
So what’s to be done? There are so many tips around, of varying effectiveness. Lemon cologne is a good one, Avon Skin So Soft (assuming you can remember which coloured bottle to buy) Vitamin B tablets taken weeks in advance or industrial quantities of garlic and so on.
We all have our favourites. I’ve tried almost all of them. And, by the way, do NOT go for the garlic. It may get rid of the mozzies but it’ll get rid of everyone else too!
On the ground, locally sourced stuff is usually the most effective. It’s also likely to be the highest for strong chemicals. Take your pick, whatever works best for you. I’ve found a combination of Brewers yeast and liberally sprayed lemon cologne works best.
BUT and here’s the thing. If you’re anything like me you’ll have everything you need in your suitcase, ready for action as soon as you unpack. Which is useless.
But why, you ask? And the answer is easy. Because the little buggers will get you the second you step out of the airport.
My number 1 travel tip? Whatever method you use make sure it isn’t in your suitcase or tucked away at the bottom of your handbag. Pull out the Mozzi patches or miniature bug spray and get it applied BEFORE you leave the plane. Starting your trip with swollen, itchy bites before you even hit the beach? Not fun!
So the simplest tip of all. Get spraying before you leave the safety of the plane. And if you too have reached that “special age” when you just may not remember in time? Put it on beforehand, before you forget.
As you get your packing done, set your phone alarm to remind you. Do whatever it takes but keep yourself insect free and have a wonderful holiday!
